The rugged unit provides reliable operation in extreme military shipboard and ground station environments.
The antenna is a balanced, center-fed biconical dipole which does not require a groundplane or counterpoise for operation. The zenith pattern is a figure-eight with maximum signal intensity along the horizon. The input VSWR, on 50 ohms, is less than 6.0:1 over the entire frequency band and less than 4.0:1 at all frequencies above 55 MHz.
All major components of the radiator and support structure are aluminum. The central feed and transformer sections are enclosed and sealed within a weatherproof epoxy fiberglass cover. The RF input connector is a Type N receptacle recessed within the base.
CA-3597 has been designed to meet the High Impact Shock requirements of MIL-S-901C, Grade A; Nuclear Air Blasts of 10 psi peak overpressure; MIL-STD-167, Type 1; and all Service Conditions of MIL-E-16400F for Class 2 equipment.
